Since Nürnberg is relatively close to Regensburg and that the markets don’t get going till about noon, we have a late departure leaving Regensburg today. That means a chance to sleep in a little, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, do a little writing, and give the gang a chance to visit the Dom or buy chocolates. A 10 o’clock departure works out just fine for today.

Nürnberg, as many of you will recall, is the home of the Nazi Party rallies as well as the site for the Nürnberg War Crimes Tribunal after WWII. It’s a fairly easy trip to go visit and it was on the list of some of our group.

The Christmas Market in Nürnberg is said to be the biggest in Germany. I don’t know if that’s true or not but is definitely a must see. Set in the Marktplatz (Market place), the booths are covered with a festive red and white, candy cane striped canvas top which adds to holiday spirit.

In addition to the Main Market, there are other markets scattered about, to include a Children’s Market and a Partner City Market. If you are looking for something special, it should be in this market!! If not, it won’t be in any of them!!

But Nürnberg isn’t only about the Markets. A short walk up the hill is the city wall and close by is the home (and now museum) of Albrecht Dürer. It’s worth the price of admission to see some of his works and learn more about him. Also close by is the Art Bunker where the art from Nürnberg was stored during the war. Again… it’s worth a tour. And one of my favorite things to do is find a local bar and enjoy one of Nürnberg’s fine beers at the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof.

With all the delicious things to eat at the Market who needs to sit down for dinner? I enjoyed having “Drei im Wenkla” or 3 Nürnberger bratwursts on a hard roll. It was so delicious I had two!!

And so, after a great meal and walking the Markets, it was time to turn in… a good night’s sleep and it will be time to head to our next stop….. Bamberg.
